Passive house standard and accessibility: Darmstadt is investing in modern educational infrastructure
With the ceremonial inauguration of the new main building at the Bertolt Brecht School, the science city of Darmstadt has reached another milestone in modernizing its educational infrastructure. Mayor Hanno Benz , city treasurer André Schellenberg and school head Holger Klötzner officially handed over the building together with headmaster Sebastian Franke Tanja Schulz from the Passive House Institute also presented a certificate for the energy -efficient new building.
The three -storey building replaces the former main building and was built in direct connection with the existing specialist class wing from 2011. The new school wing meets modern requirements for accessibility, sustainability and pedagogical functionality .
"The opening marks a new chapter in the history of the Bertolt Brecht School-a school for equal opportunities and the principle of 'education for everyone'," said Hanno Benz. The building is symbolic of the future and is another component in the comprehensive expansion of the urban educational landscape.
City treasurer André Schellenberg also emphasizes the role model function of the project: "The stage in the auditorium, the barrier -free room concept and the energy -efficient construction set on both sides.
School head Holger Klötzner sees a place of community and inspiration in the new building: "Young people can grow, learn and develop here."
Architecture with foresight
The new building was realized as an almost square flat roof building with a two-storey, all-round escape and sun protection balcony . The facade consists of spacious window surfaces, wooden panels and ventilation elements. Access takes place via a newly designed school yard for which an old outbuilding was torn down.
Inside, two elevators , handicapped -accessible sanitary facilities and a well thought -out room concept ensure inclusion and functionality. All subject -specific rooms and the administration are accessible. The auditorium is opened by a mobile ramp.
In the run -up to the planning, there was a close coordination with monument protection . Architectural references to neighboring Bernhard-Oldelung-School were also integrated into the draft.
