Funding project strengthens climate protection and urban green spaces
As part of the "Natural Climate Protection in Municipalities" (NKK) funding program, the city of Griesheim planted nine new trees within the city limits. Three trees were planted at Zöllerplatz, and six more at the festival grounds. The aim of this initiative is to sustainably improve the urban climate and enhance public spaces in the long term.
At the festival grounds, five of the new trees were integrated into existing planting beds along the edge of the area. On the eastern side of the grounds, the city further widened the existing beds and added more trees. A silver linden tree was planted in the grounds themselves, equipped with an underground root chamber system. This is designed to provide the tree roots with ample space while simultaneously reducing the stress caused by surrounding traffic.
To protect the roots, a drive-over tree grate will be installed above ground so that the area can continue to be used as a parking lot. Since the installation of this tree grate cannot take place until January 2026, the newly planted tree is currently secured with a construction fence.
Work on Lindenstrasse will continue in 2026
Alongside the planting work, construction is also underway on Lindenstrasse. Work there is currently suspended until January 12, 2026. In the section between Sterngasse and Tannenweg, nine planting beds have already been enlarged and equipped with impact protection. These protective measures are intended to prevent vehicles from driving onto or walking on the beds, which are filled with loose tree substrate. They are expressly not intended as parking areas.
From January 12, 2026, work will continue on the section between Tannenweg and Südring. The city expects the measures there to be completed by mid-February 2026. With the plantings and structural adjustments, Griesheim aims to make a further contribution to climate protection and improve the quality of life in public spaces.
