The future of municipal finances
GROSS-GERAU DISTRICT – The future prospects of municipalities in times of tight budgets will be the focus of the New Year's reception hosted by the Gross-Gerau district on Friday, January 17, 2025. The event begins at 4:00 p.m. (arrival for welcome coffee is possible from 3:30 p.m.) in the Georg Büchner Hall of the District Administration Office. Moderator Christian Döring will welcome the guests, followed by brief greetings from District Administrator Thomas Will and District Council Chairwoman Renate Meixner-Römer.
The keynote speaker and conversation starter will be economist and sociologist Prof. Dr. Thomas Döring (Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences). He completed his habilitation on design issues related to a reform of the federal fiscal equalization system. This will be followed by a panel discussion with public figures from the fields of politics, sports, education, culture, social services, and skilled trades. Participants include: Nils Kliesing, head of the Groß-Gerau District Chamber of Skilled Crafts; Juliane Kuhlmann, president of the Hessian State Sports Federation; Lucian Lazar, head of the Groß-Gerau/Rüsselsheim Regional Diaconal Service; Stefan Stein, chairman of the District Parents' Council; and Christian Suhr, director of the BüchnerBühne Riedstadt theater.
This panel discussion, and the dialogue with other guests, aims to explore the societal implications and necessary actions when local governments run out of money. The official program concludes with an opportunity for informal discussion over refreshments.
