Record year 2025: 2,779 children born in 2,740 births
Baby Mateo was the first child born at Darmstadt Hospital on New Year's Day 2026. He arrived at 1:39 a.m. For the team of obstetricians, births around New Year's Eve are always special – and at the same time, a familiar routine. By midday on January 2nd, nine babies born in the maternity ward.
Highest number of births in the history of the hospital
In 2025, 2,779 children born at Darmstadt Hospital in 2,740 deliveries, including 45 sets of twins . The proportion of boys was again slightly higher at 51 percent , while 49 percent were girls. The sex of one child was not recorded.
“This is the highest number of births ever recorded at a clinic in Darmstadt. Even our previous record year of 2021 has been surpassed,” says PD Dr. Sven Ackermann , Director of the Women’s Clinic. He thanks the dedicated team of doctors and midwives who ensure safe childbirth around the clock.
For comparison:
in 2019 around 1,900 births recorded,
in 2021 there were 2,738 , and
in 2024 around 2,600 births .
Contrary to the national trend, the company continues on a growth trajectory
While birth rates across Germany declined significantly at times, the Darmstadt hospital remained stable. This trend continued in 2025: While Germany recorded a 4.3 percent decrease , birth rates in Darmstadt rose again.
Midwife-led delivery room as an important factor
Together with Sonja Pilz , head of the obstetrics department, the team feels well-positioned for the future. The midwife-led birthing unit , attracting many expectant mothers from southern Hesse. It offers a birth center-like atmosphere, without labor-inducing drugs or medical intervention – with the aim of achieving the most natural birth possible.
Should complications arise, all medical resources of a Level 1 hospital with a perinatal center available at any time.
The only perinatal center in southern Hesse
The Perinatal Center employs obstetricians, neonatologists, and specially trained pediatric nurses who work closely together. Pregnancies and births are managed from the 23rd week of pregnancy . The close proximity of the delivery room, operating room, and neonatal ward ensures an optimal start in life.
Team reinforcements from April
In April, the team will welcome new members: The first graduates of the dual midwifery degree program will return as permanent midwives after completing their exams. Many of them have already become familiar with the delivery room during their practical placements and will now permanently join the team.
