Measure aims to increase road safety and improve access for buses and emergency vehicles
As announced by the Science City of Darmstadt , a complete no-parking zone in sections of Untere Mühlstraße and Weiterstädter Straße Monday, October 13, 2025. The goal is to increase traffic safety and access for buses, waste collection vehicles, and emergency vehicles . The city is thus implementing announced measures to improve traffic safety.
Bottlenecks and dangerous situations caused by stationary traffic
The new no-parking zone affects Untere Mühlstraße between Messeler Straße and Gute-Garten-Straße, as well as Weiterstädter Straße between Wixhäuser Straße and Frankfurter Landstraße .
Paul Georg Wandrey, head of the traffic department , explains that Weiterstädter Straße, as a key access road to the Arheilgen Cemetery and the Arheilgen S-Bahn station, is particularly busy. Vehicles parked illegally on sidewalks or roadways repeatedly cause bottlenecks, dangerous spots, and disruptions to bus service .
At its narrowest points, the sidewalk is only 1.25 meters wide , pedestrians and people with limited mobility . At the same time, legally parked vehicles on the roadway obstruct bus traffic, waste disposal, and emergency services . However, the parking spaces between numbers 14 and 26 will remain open until further notice and will continue to be monitored.
Improved safety and traffic flow
According to Wandrey, similar problems also occur in Untere Mühlstraße regularly blocks buses , makes it difficult to approach the bus stop and sometimes leads to accidents.
Following a joint analysis by the Mobility and Civil Engineering Office , the Road Traffic Authority , and the police, the implementation of the no-stopping zone was decided upon.
"The no-stopping zone will improve visibility , enable smooth operations for public transport and emergency vehicles, and more mobility peace in the road space," Wandrey concluded.
