Family weekend with history, mustard and secrets
Groß-Gerau/Cochem. The Odenwald Club Groß-Gerau spent an eventful weekend on the Moselle. The destination of this year's family trip was the town of Cochem , where participants gained fascinating insights into history, nature, and culture—and were able to call themselves "secret keepers" at the end.
"Now you're also keepers of secrets," said Lilli, the guide in the formerly secret Bundesbank bunker in Cochem , after explaining the impressive facility and its function during the Cold War to the OWK members. Billions of emergency banknotes were once stored in the bunker – in case of a currency reform.
From mustard tears to Moselle boat trips
The 38-member OWK group, including children, adults, and even a baby, was accommodated at the Cochem Youth Hostel. After a city tour, the program included a visit to the Historical Mustard Museum . During an entertaining tour, the participants learned how mustard was made in the old days – and how the smell literally brought tears to some people's eyes.
In the afternoon we went on a boat trip on the Moselle , before the day ended with a walk to the youth hostel and a shared dinner.
Bundesbank bunker as highlight
The second day finally brought the hikers to the Bundesbank Bunker , which proved to be the highlight of the trip. The technical facilities, which met the highest security standards during the Cold War, are still preserved there today. The only regret was that the emergency banknotes from that time have since been destroyed.
