Head of Transport Wandrey: "This will protect the renovated pathways at the Wedding Tower"
DARMSTADT – Olbrichweg, from the corner of Lucasweg, is once again open exclusively to pedestrians and cyclists. On Thursday (21st), the city reinstalled the bollards that had been removed over three years ago to allow access for construction work.
“The heavy construction traffic in recent years – at the exhibition building, the plane tree grove, and the Alice Hospital – has severely impacted the situation around the Wedding Tower,” explained Head of Transport Paul Georg Wandrey . “Furthermore, the unrestricted access to the pathways renovated since last year has been interpreted by some as an invitation to park vehicles directly in front of the World Heritage Site. We are now clearly and permanently putting a stop to this.”
During the approximately three-year construction period of the east extension at Alice Hospital, Olbrichweg was opened to construction vehicles. After the inauguration in December 2024 and occupancy in January 2025, the hospital initially still needed access for work on the grounds and due to the clearance height of the new underground parking garage, which was too low for some vehicles.
With the expiration of the road traffic permit, Alice Hospital has now confirmed that the special use permit is no longer required. "This means that the section of Olbrichweg is once again a traffic-calmed zone, and pedestrians and cyclists can use it without any problems," said Wandrey.
