Traffic Director Wandrey: “This will protect the renovated paths at the Wedding Tower.”
DARMSTADT – Olbrichweg, from the corner of Lucasweg, is once again open exclusively to pedestrians and cyclists. On Thursday (21), the city reinstated the barriers that had been removed over three years ago to allow for construction work.
"The heavy construction traffic in recent years – at the exhibition building, the Platanenhain, and the Alice Hospital – has placed a significant strain on the situation around the Wedding Tower," explained Paul Georg Wandrey . "Moreover, the free access to the paths, which have been renovated since last year, was interpreted by some as an invitation to park vehicles directly in front of the World Heritage Site. We are now clearly and permanently prohibiting this."
During the approximately three-year construction period of the east extension at Alice Hospital, Olbrichweg was opened to construction vehicles. After the inauguration in December 2024 and occupancy in January 2025, the hospital initially required the access for work on the outdoor facilities and due to the clearance height of the new underground parking garage, which was too low for some vehicles.
With the expiration of the road traffic authority's permit, Alice Hospital has now confirmed that the special use is no longer necessary. "This means that the section of Olbrichweg is once again traffic-calmed, and pedestrians and cyclists can use it without disruption," Wandrey said.
