Tree in the Goddelau cemetery infected by mushrooms
The Büchnerstadt Riedstadt regretted that the old and large ash in the cemetery in Goddelau must be felled for reasons of traffic safety. The impressive ash has been looked after for the townscape for years due to its age and its importance. In 2020, after an externally unexpected larger branch, an intensive assessment of the tree was carried out after a storm with the supply of a second, external tree expert.
As a result of these examinations, extensive maintenance measures such as a relief cut in the crown and the installation of a crown fuse were carried out in 2021. Unfortunately, a new intensive assessment of the tree has now shown that the damage to the tree has increased massively and the tree is no longer safe. The reason for the advanced weakening of the tree has been the climatic changes with the dry and hot summers since 2018, as a result of which the groundwater level had also fallen significantly. The - presumably only short -term - relaxation of the situation in 2024 with significantly more precipitation and increased groundwater level was obviously too late for this tree.
As a result of a general weakening, the tree was then infected by two different fush infections that pull over the entire tree (shaggy Schiller porling and ash tree sponge). These not only continuously affect its vitality, but also drastically reduce traffic safety. This is all the more serious because the tree stands in a regularly frequented place near the cemetery wall and above a path connection and an adjacent private garden. The ability of the tree to react to the existing fungal infections is hardly available due to general weakening.
Conservation, relationship meadow restoration of traffic safety would only be possible by a strong pruning of the crown. Such a pruning would mean further weakening of the ash and open additional constraints for further disease and fungal infections and thus lead to a complete death earlier than later. In addition, special examinations and other maintenance measures would have to be carried out regularly, which would not only be cost -intensive, but would also only ensure short -term security.
Due to the generally poor state of health of the tree and the two rapidly progressive fungal infections, the city of Riedstadt has therefore decided to remove the tree and replace it with a new planting, which is to take place a little further away from the wall and the adjacent path.
There is an extensive asthillage inside the tree top. This cavity is currently not populated by an animal. In the run -up to the removal of the tree, the cavity is secured and spent to a suitable place in order to enable resistration and thus at least partially maintain the existing ecological structure.
The felling work is to be carried out by a specialist company that has experience with the cases of large trees under difficult conditions and has the necessary special equipment. They should be completed by February 28, 2025 at the latest.
