Over 120 visitors learn about modern heating technology and solar energy
On November 15th, the science city of Darmstadt participated for the first time in the nationwide "Open Boiler Room Day," an initiative of Greenpeace and LocalZero. Under the motto "Bringing Electricity and Heat Together," more than 120 citizens accepted the invitation. The Office for Climate Protection and Climate Adaptation, along with the neighborhood initiatives heiner solarberatung, heiner energie, and heiner*heizungsoptimierung, provided information on sustainable heating systems and solar energy through short presentations and information booths.
Heat pump solutions in practical use in Darmstadt boiler rooms
In the afternoon, nine private households throughout the city opened their boiler rooms to interested members of the public. Over 100 visitors were able to experience different heat pump solutions firsthand – from air-to-water heat pumps and a groundwater heat pump to domestic hot water heat pumps and split air conditioning systems, as well as a shared heating solution for ten terraced houses.
The planned appointment with BUND to view a geothermal heat pump has been postponed at short notice to December 6th at 2 pm. Registration for this is possible directly with BUND Darmstadt.
Climate Protection Officer Michael Kolmer emphasizes the importance of the format: “The combination of a central information event and the subsequent visit to actual installations has proven extremely effective. This makes the energy transition tangible for homeowners. My thanks go especially to the volunteer initiatives and private individuals who have agreed to open their boiler rooms to the neighborhood. This civic engagement demonstrates how practical and motivating direct insights into modern heating technology can be.”
Positive feedback from the neighborhood
Positive feedback also came from the participating households. Christoph Schaaf, owner of a boiler room in Arheilgen, reports: "Many guests were surprised by how quiet and efficient our heat pump is. It was a pleasure to show that the technology is now perfectly suitable for everyday use."
The campaign made it clear that there is great interest in concrete practical examples of switching to climate-friendly heating solutions in Darmstadt, and that information is particularly sought after when it is directly linked to experiences from the neighborhood.
