A week of mountain adventures between Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Eibsee and the Zugspitze summit
The Odenwald Club (OWK) Groß-Gerau undertook an eventful week of hiking in the Bavarian Alps. Their destination was the traditional Zugspitze resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen , where the 38 participants spent a week exploring the beauty of the mountains on diverse routes.
On the day of arrival, the group explored the charming half-timbered houses, old farmhouses and cozy alleyways of the town during a walk.
Hikes on the Wank and to the Zugspitze
A first highlight was the hike up the Wank , Garmisch-Partenkirchen's local mountain. After taking the Wankbahn cable car up, the hikers enjoyed magnificent views and came across numerous benches along the way, each bearing a quote from famous poets and philosophers. The free-roaming horses with bells around their necks were particularly impressive.
A highlight of the week was the trip to the Zugspitze . Under a brilliant blue sky, the OWK members reached Germany's highest point at 2,962 meters via the cogwheel and glacier railway. A visit to the Tyrolean side, the panoramic view over the Eibsee, and the obligatory group photo at the golden summit cross rounded off the experience.
Through the Partnach Gorge and up to the Eckbauer
Partnach Gorge , was strenuous but impressive . After the gorge, the trail wound its way up to the Eckbauer mountain inn at 1,236 meters. After a refreshing break, we took the Eckbauer cable car back down to the valley.
High-altitude hikes and nature experiences
Despite the drizzle, the group took a trip on the Alpspitzbahn cable car to the Osterfelderkopf (2,050 m) . A section of the nature trail, complete with a summit cross and giant summit register, offered impressive views. After a stop at the Kreuzeckhaus, a mountain hut run by the German Alpine Club (DAV), they descended to the valley on the Kreuzeckbahn cable car.
The hikes around Lake Eibsee and the idyllic Lake Badersee near Grainau also showcased the Alps at their most beautiful. A final leg of the journey led to Lake Riessersee, where we visited the historic natural toboggan run dating back to the Olympics.
Thanks to the hiking guide
At the end of the trip, Annerose Kohlhaas small gifts to hiking guides Heinz Pitzer and Rosel Wolk as a token of appreciation for the excellent organization. The group covered a total of approximately 53 kilometers and 1,380 meters of elevation gain. After a week full of shared experiences, it was time to say goodbye – with one last look at the mountains.
