Volcanic landscape, hiking pleasure and animal encounters in Schotten
A four-day hiking trip took 34 women from the Groß-Gerau branch of the Odenwald Club to the Vogelsberg region – with stops around Schotten, the Vulkaneum (volcano museum), the Hoherodskopf mountain, and the Nidda reservoir. The trip offered a successful blend of experiencing nature, physical activity, and camaraderie .
Volcano exploration and view from the Alteburgkopf
The event kicked off with a visit to the Vulkaneum Schotten , where interactive exhibits provided information about the region's geological past . Following a champagne reception at the Hotel Sonnenberg, Karola Kunz presented the participants with a symbolic "monkey's fist" – the first highlight of the social program.
On the second day, the Volcano Tour 4 through the region. Highlights included the view from the lookout tower , the Spiess Monument , and the impressive Nidda Reservoir . The groups chose different routes back – via the Alteburgkopf , the giant sequoias , or around the reservoir.
Hiking day on the Hoherodskopf
Another stage began at the Hoherodskopf . Following the "H" marker, the group hiked past a raised bog to the source of the Nidda River . Afterwards, the group split again: some hiked towards the Gackerstein , while others stayed on the main path. The destination was the Taufstein Hut , before the group climbed the 765-meter-high Hoherodskopf with its radio tower and treetop walkway . In the evening, humorous contributions from Gisela Dietz, Edelgart Rietz, and Rosel Wolk ensured a lively atmosphere.
Closing event at the Schotten bird park
On the day of departure, the group visited the Schotten Bird Park , where they could admire llamas, meerkats, ostriches, and snakes, golden pheasants caused quite a stir. After a group lunch at the hotel and a final sunbath, the bus took the hiking group back to Groß-Gerau.
