Paleolithic art as a window into the Ice Age animal world
The Darmstadt Natural Science Association announces a public lecture Wednesday, December 10, 2025 , at 6 p.m. Hessian State Museum Darmstadt (Friedensplatz 1) . Doors open at 5:30 p.m. , and admission is free .
The lecture “New Discoveries from the Paleolithic Age – Ice Age Fauna Reflected in Paleolithic Art” is dedicated to the animal species of the last Ice Age and their way of life. With the appearance of modern humans, depictions have emerged for the first time that go beyond mere food remains: engravings, reliefs, statuettes, and cave paintings document the Ice Age animal world like a picture book of the past.
The focus is on late Ice Age animal species , their distribution, and ecological living conditions. In addition to paleontological finds, archaeological remains are presented and discussed in terms of their informational value. The lecture demonstrates how new scientific findings expand—and occasionally challenge—our understanding of this era.

The speaker is Prof. Christoph Bernd from Bexbach. He heads an office for field research specializing in zoology (amphibians and reptiles), archaeology, geology, and environmental education. He is also a staff member of the GEOSKOP Prehistoric Museum , a branch of the Palatinate Museum at Lichtenberg Castle near Kusel.
