Mayor Benz and police representatives discuss ways to ensure safe coexistence in the city park
Under the title "Herrngarten for everyone again," the SPD parliamentary group invites you to a public panel discussion at the Herrngarten Café on Thursday, August 28, 2025, at 5:30 p.m. The focus will be on how Darmstadt's Herrngarten can be made safe and accessible again as a central city park for all sections of the population.
Participants in the discussion are Mayor Hanno Benz , Hartmut Scherer (Chief Police Director and Head of the Darmstadt-Dieburg Police Directorate), Alexander Götz (Head of the 1st Darmstadt Police Station), Michael Siebel (SPD parliamentary group leader) and Daniel Görisch (resident of the Johannesviertel).
SPD parliamentary group leader Michael Siebel emphasizes: "We now need a solution that makes Herrngarten accessible to everyone again. This is not about ostracizing people with addictions, but rather about strengthening support and care. At the same time, dealers must be consistently combated and the legitimate interests of citizens must be respected."
The SPD points out that Herrngarten is currently a place of tension: on the one hand, addicts in the open drug scene, and on the other, families and residents who want to use the park as a place of recreation. The aim of the event is to exchange ideas about possible solutions that combine safety, support services, and peaceful coexistence.
