Mayor Benz and police representatives discuss ways to ensure safe coexistence in the city park
Under the title "Herrngarten again for everyone," the SPD parliamentary group invites you to a public panel discussion at the Herrngarten Café on Thursday, August 28, 2025, at 5:30 p.m. The discussion will focus on how Darmstadt's Herrngarten, as a central city park, can once again be made accessible and safe for all population groups.
Participants in the discussion include Mayor Hanno Benz , Hartmut Scherer (Chief Superintendent and Head of the Darmstadt-Dieburg Police Directorate), Alexander Götz (Head of the 1st Police Precinct Darmstadt), Michael Siebel (SPD Parliamentary Group Chairman) and Daniel Görisch (resident from the Johannesviertel district).
SPD parliamentary group leader Michael Siebel emphasizes: “We now need a solution that makes the Herrngarten usable for everyone again. This is not about stigmatizing people with addictions, but about strengthening help and support services. At the same time, dealers must be consistently combated and the legitimate interests of citizens must be respected.”
The SPD points out that the Herrngarten park is currently a place of tension: on the one hand, people with addictions in the open drug scene, and on the other hand, families and local residents who want to use the park as a place of recreation. The aim of the event is to exchange ideas about possible solutions that combine safety, support services, and peaceful coexistence.
