A new animal from Zurich Zoo adds to the reptile diversity in Darmstadt
Darmstadt Zoo's Vivarium is delighted to announce a special new arrival: a panther chameleon can now be seen in the large terrarium in the tropical house. The animal comes from Zurich Zoo and continues a long tradition at the Vivarium – panther chameleons have been kept there for decades.
These reptiles from northern Madagascar are fascinating due to their numerous unique features. They can change their body color depending on their sex, the temperature, and their mood. Their toes, modified into grasping pincers, allow them to climb securely through the branches, and their tail serves as an additional prehensile organ. Their eyes are also extraordinary: they can move independently of each other, providing them with almost complete 360-degree vision.
The panther chameleon's tongue is particularly spectacular: it can be extended to one and a half times its body length – at speeds of up to 20 kilometers per hour. This allows the animals to catch their prey with lightning speed.
With the new animal from Zurich, the Vivarium Zoo expands its offerings with another impressive example of exotic biodiversity.
