Federal election on February 23, 2025 – Parties to vote
The federal election is just around the corner, and constituency 185 Darmstadt is once again in the spotlight. With its blend of urban dynamism and rural surroundings, the constituency encompasses the science city of Darmstadt and 14 neighboring municipalities, including Griesheim, Pfungstadt, and Seeheim-Jugenheim. The election here promises to be exciting, as the race for the direct mandate remains traditionally fiercely contested.
In Darmstadt, as throughout Germany, a mixed electoral system is used: the first vote determines the direct mandate in the constituency, the second vote determines the distribution of seats in the Bundestag. For years, candidates from the SPD and CDU dominated the political landscape. However, the picture has changed, at the latest since the last election in 2021. In the Green Party stronghold of Darmstadt, a gripping three-way race unfolded, with the SPD, CDU, and Greens locked in a tight head-to-head contest. This year, up-and-coming candidates and newcomers can also realistically expect to have a chance.
The Darmstadt constituency reflects the political changes in Germany. Traditional power structures are crumbling, while smaller parties are gaining increasing influence. Given the growing polarization and the diverse challenges facing the region, the election result here could be a bellwether for national politics. One thing is clear: the race for every vote will be fiercely contested.
An overview of the candidates:
