Literary program from June 23rd to 29th with events throughout the city
PEN Germany invites you to its annual conference in Darmstadt from June 23 to 29, 2025. The diverse program offers numerous public events at key locations throughout the city – including the Literaturhaus (House of Literature), the Centralstation (Central Station), the Merck Stadium, the Women's Center, and the Orangerie (Orangery). Events are also planned in the city center.
As Michael Landgraf, Secretary General of German PEN, explains, the annual conference is intended to send a clear message about the importance of literature, freedom of expression, and democracy. In addition to readings and discussions with renowned authors, the focus will be on the "Writers-in-Exile" and "Writers-in-Prison" programs, which address the plight of persecuted writers worldwide.
A highlight of the week is the attempt to break the world reading record on June 26th at the Merck Stadium in Böllenfalltor, in which around 2,000 students will participate. The program also includes the election of a new PEN board.
The conference is being held in cooperation with the science city of Darmstadt and numerous regional partners.
