A project with the youth office and the association Auszeit showcases leisure activities in the Büchner city
As the city of Riedstadt reports, 14 students from an intensive German class at the Martin-Niemöller-School (MNS), in cooperation with the city's youth office and the Auszeit association, have created a special leisure guide: a photo comic about Riedstadt and the surrounding area. Eleven of the participating students, along with their teacher Melanie Sinner, proudly received their printed copies at the town hall.
Insights into the city's leisure areas
As part of the project, the ten- to fourteen-year-olds explored numerous locations in Riedstadt – from the skate park at the Goddelau youth center to sports fields, playgrounds, riding stables, and the volunteer fire department. A trip to Gernsheim was also part of the program. They documented their impressions with photographs and supplemented the pictures with short texts and speech bubbles.
This resulted in humorous and informative scenes: a horse with the caption "I like being brushed," a basketball hoop with the note "This is the best place to play basketball," and snapshots of a volleyball game.
QR codes lead to further offers.
The inclusion of QR codes in the photo comic was particularly well-received. These codes link to further information about youth centers, playgrounds, clubs, and recreational and meeting places. "This way, everyone can see all the great things to do in Riedstadt," said department head Rick Hölzer, who conveyed greetings from Mayor Marcus Kretschmann.
Promoting language and integration
The young people come from Afghanistan, Syria, Spain, Ukraine, and Turkey. In addition to playfully exploring their new surroundings, learning German was also a key focus. Through creative work with photos and texts, the participants were able to practice everyday expressions and expand their language skills.
Successful cooperation for several years
The comic project has already been implemented several times jointly by the youth office and the comprehensive school. Both sides emphasize its great value: it promotes integration, strengthens self-efficacy, and provides young people with low-threshold access to their new hometown.
