Portraits featuring Schleich horses, tree rollers, and unusual perspectives
During a three-day workshop organized by the city's youth services, creative images were created around the Goddelau youth center during the Easter holidays. Under the guidance of youth worker Heiko Wambold and workshop leader Faßnacht, the participating children and teenagers explored their surroundings with cameras – searching for extraordinary photographic ideas.
While the first few days were dedicated to photography in nature and urban spaces – such as Mainz – the final days focused on portraiture. The goal was to creatively portray oneself photographically. A challenge that would give not only children, but also many adults food for thought, as Wambold notes with a smile.
The participants implemented their ideas with great imagination: Lisbeth (9), for example, expressed her enthusiasm for horses using Schleich figures – until she and Tyler (11) decided they would rather appear in front of the camera themselves, galloping. Other teams experimented with natural materials and changing roles – sometimes as a photographer, sometimes as a "tree".
“This isn’t about technical perfection,” emphasizes Fassnacht. “Rather, the focus is on the joy of creative expression and a keen eye for unusual perspectives.”
At the end of the workshop, participants were allowed to choose their favorite pictures – one large-format image, five more in smaller formats – as a personal memento of three days full of creativity, movement and community.
