New signs in Darmstadt draw attention to hidden habitats
The Municipal Authority for Municipal Tasks and Services (EAD) supports the urban nature campaign "Points of Insects ," developed by BUND and bioversum Kranichstein. The initiative demonstrates that parks, meadows, gardens, and other green spaces in urban areas provide valuable refuges, food sources, and habitats for numerous insect species.
New locations awarded
"Roadside Greenery" has been installed in front of the EAD premises at Sensfelder Weg 33. It highlights the important role verges and accompanying green spaces play for migrating and foraging insects.
along the "Forest and Meadow Adventure Trail" at the Zoo Vivarium has also been designated a "Biodiversity Area ." This area provides insects with ideal conditions for living and overwintering.
Voices on the campaign
Environmental Director Michael Kolmer emphasized:
"These two locations are excellent examples of what urban nature can look like in practice. Here, we will be able to observe numerous wild bees, butterflies, and beetles from spring to autumn. With the Points of Insects signs, we want to not only inform but also encourage participation."
City Treasurer André Schellenberg added:
"The Points of Insects signs draw attention to green spaces where one might not initially expect a variety of animal habitats. This makes the initiative so valuable and raises awareness of biodiversity."
Sabine Kleindiek, EAD's first operations manager, also emphasized the importance of the campaign:
"We are pleased to be able to provide further impetus for promoting biodiversity. The placement in the Zoo Vivarium, where visitors can receive targeted information about native animals and plants, is particularly successful."
