New signs in Darmstadt draw attention to hidden habitats
The municipal services department (EAD) supports the urban nature campaign "Points of Insects ," developed by BUND and the bioversum Kranichstein. The initiative demonstrates that parks, meadows, gardens, and other green spaces in urban areas offer valuable refuges, food sources, and habitats for numerous insect species.
New locations awarded
"Roadside Greenery" has been installed in front of the EAD company premises at Sensfelder Weg 33. It highlights the important role that verges and accompanying green spaces play for migrating and foraging insects. Furthermore,
the "Forest and Meadow Adventure Trail" at the Vivarium Zoo has been designated a "Biodiversity Area ." Here, insects find ideal conditions for living and overwintering.
Voices on the campaign
Environmental Officer Michael Kolmer emphasized:
“These two locations are excellent examples of what urban nature can look like in practice. Here, we will be able to observe numerous wild bees, butterflies, and beetles from spring to autumn. With the Points of Insects signs, we not only want to inform, but also motivate people to participate.”
City treasurer André Schellenberg added:
“The Points of Insects signs draw attention to green spaces where one would not initially expect to find a variety of habitats for animals. This is what makes the initiative so valuable and strengthens awareness of biodiversity.”
Sabine Kleindiek, Head of Operations at EAD, also emphasized the importance of the campaign:
“We are delighted to be able to provide further impetus for the promotion of biodiversity. The placement in the Vivarium Zoo is particularly successful, where visitors can obtain targeted information about native animals and plants.”
