Mayor Benz: "Actively shaping growth – ecologically, socially and economically"
Darmstadt. The population of the science city of Darmstadt has exceeded 170,000 . As of May 31, 2025, exactly 170,073 people registered in Darmstadt – faster growth than previously predicted. The majority of new residents are German citizens, while among international immigrants, India, Afghanistan, Turkey, Syria, and Ukraine are among the most important countries of origin. The majority of new arrivals are between 18 and 34 years old .
Growth pressure brings new challenges
Mayor Hanno Benz speaks of a significant development step for the city – with multifaceted consequences: “The growth increases the pressure on the housing market , but also rejuvenates the average age and brings highly qualified specialists integrated growth strategy is needed that social justice, economic strength and ecological compatibility .
Citizen participation as a pillar of urban development
Besides structural and infrastructural aspects, Benz also sees growth as an opportunity for greater social cohesion and democratic participation . Citizen participation should become an even more central component of urban development processes in the future.
Land use can only be resolved jointly with the district
Given the limited land reserves, Darmstadt is relying on cooperation with the surrounding region. A joint inter-municipal industrial park with Weiterstadt is already in the planning stages. The aim is to enable both new housing and economic development responsible land use
Affordable housing in focus
In light of rising rents, Mayor Benz is calling for an open debate about more cost-effective building standards . "Together with the district and other partners, we must find solutions that also benefit people with lower incomes."
Integration and social infrastructure
With increasing immigration, the city's responsibility integration programs and affordable housing . Associations and civil society initiatives are to play a central role in this. One example is the new roller sports hall in the Bürgerpark , the construction of which was approved by the city council.
Growth conference in November
How Darmstadt should grow in the future is the focus of the 2025 Growth Conference , which takes place on November 28th . Together with the Darmstadt-Dieburg district , universities , the (IHK) , and chambers of , sustainable strategies will be discussed. Mayor Benz expressly invites participation: "Urban development is a task for society as a whole – all citizens are invited to contribute."
