The municipal prevention council brings together administration, police and social institutions.
As the City of Darmstadt reports, around 60 representatives from the city administration, police, social institutions, and local politics participated in the annual prevention conference of the Darmstadt Municipal Prevention Council (KPRD) on Wednesday. The event, held in the Rosa Parks Hall on Lincoln Street, was themed "Strong Together – Networked Prevention for a Safe Urban Society" and focused on current challenges and successful prevention approaches.
The Municipal Prevention Council develops long-term strategies for a safe and livable Darmstadt on behalf of the city and the South Hesse Police Headquarters. Close cooperation between the administration, police, support services, and civil society forms the basis for this work.
Mayor Hanno Benz emphasized the importance of a coordinated approach: “People should feel safe in Darmstadt. Prevention, consistent action against violations, and the conscious design of public spaces all go hand in hand. The KPRD (Criminal Prevention Unit) is an important instrument in this – as is the Society and Police Association, which is committed to crime prevention and supporting victims.”
Police Vice President Dirk Fornoff emphasized that security is a shared responsibility: While the police can guarantee objective security, true security only arises through collective action. The KPRD (Criminal Police Service) enables the development of scientifically sound, networked measures and the early establishment of effective intervention chains.
Mayor Barbara Akdeniz sees the prevention council as a place of reliable cooperation: "When we network, we are stronger. Prevention is a guiding principle for Darmstadt's social policy and is continuously developed further through the impulses of the conference."
The expert discussions focused on topics such as neighborhood safety, community support, media literacy among young people, the treatment of marginalized people in public spaces, and the KOMPASS . It became clear that prevention is most effective where stakeholders combine their expertise and cooperate early on.
Head of Public Order Paul Georg Wandrey emphasized the importance of this ongoing cooperation: “Security is not achieved through isolated measures. The KPRD provides the platform on which we can jointly develop solutions and thus improve coexistence in Darmstadt.”
In 2026, the discussed priorities will be further developed in working groups of the KPRD. The goal remains to establish prevention as a shared responsibility in the long term and to expand the network structures in Darmstadt.
