Blue-green algae levels have decreased, but increased attention is still recommended
Darmstadt. The water quality of the Prinz von Hessen mine has improved significantly following the cooler temperatures in the second half of July. According to the Science City of Darmstadt, regular measurements since last week have revealed a stable, low level of cyanobacteria. Visibility is now also back above one meter. This means the water body is currently on the "increased attention" monitoring level of the Federal Environment Agency.
Bathers are nevertheless asked to remain cautious. Parks Department Head Michael Kolmer explains:
"I am very pleased about the improvement in water quality. However, it cannot be ruled out that the high summer temperatures in the coming days will stimulate blue-green algae growth again. The Parks Department employees will continue to reliably measure the water quality."
Anyone swimming in the Prinz von Hessen mine should continue to avoid swallowing water and avoid areas contaminated with algae. Blue-green algae can be identified by an intense greenish color in the water or streaks on the surface. After swimming, it is recommended to shower thoroughly.
