Pioneer of the UNESCO World Heritage recognition of the Mathildenhöhe dies at the age of 83
Darmstadt. The science city of Darmstadt bids farewell to Professor Berthold Burkhardt , who passed away on June 3, 2025, at the age of 83.
Mayor and Head of Cultural Affairs Hanno Benz praised Burkhardt as an outstanding figure whose work extended far beyond academic teaching:
"Professor Burkhardt shaped the world of architecture and engineering. As a long-standing member of the Advisory Board of the Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt, he enriched their work with professional expertise, cultural-historical understanding, and sustained commitment. His contribution to the successful World Heritage application of the Mathildenhöhe was invaluable."
With his interdisciplinary perspective on architecture, structural engineering, and monument preservation, Burkhardt provided decisive impetus for the substantive precision and quality of the World Heritage application. In particular, his sensitivity to the architectural significance of the Mathildenhöhe as a Gesamtkunstwerk (total work of art) and his ability to combine technical and design perspectives made him an indispensable advisor.
The recognition of the Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021 is due in no small part to his commitment, Benz continued: "With him, the science city of Darmstadt loses a personality who impressed with his professional competence and human integrity."
