District Administrator Will: “Dynamics ranking is not a warning sign – we remain strongly positioned”
District of Groß-Gerau – According to the latest Prognos Future Atlas 2025, the district of Groß-Gerau ranks 158th out of 400 districts and independent cities in Germany, thus remaining in the top half of the nationwide comparison. Within Hesse, the district ranks 11th out of 26. The economic development agency and District Administrator Thomas Will view the result with nuance: While the district lost places in the dynamism ranking, the key indicators themselves have generally improved over the years .
"Strength" category , the Groß-Gerau district even achieves 7th place in Hesse , directly behind cities and districts such as Darmstadt, Frankfurt, and the Hochtaunus district. The Future Atlas evaluates regions in the categories of demographics, labor market, competition & innovation, and prosperity & social situation .
Decline in dynamics as a consequence of a good starting position
Sven Christiansen, head of the Regional Development, Economy and Environment department, explains: “The Groß-Gerau district regularly performs worse in rankings of dynamism because we start from a high level. Our development steps are smaller, but constant.” The same conclusion was already reached in the 2024 economic report .
The economic development agency also emphasizes that in the past four regional rankings, places have been continuously lost , even though most individual indicators have improved . The reason given is the closely clustered index values, which cause significant shifts in ranking even with minimal changes. Furthermore, many regions are developing faster on average – the Groß-Gerau district is maintaining its level, but the others are catching up.
The district continues to invest in quality of life and infrastructure
For District Administrator Thomas Will, the ranking is no cause for concern : "The results are a snapshot in time. What is much more important is how we, together with businesses, politicians and employees, secure and improve the long-term conditions for living and working in the district."
Referring to recent statements regarding the role of the district, he adds: “The district is not the enemy of the municipalities. The district and school levies benefit the towns and municipalities – for example, in the area of social services or school construction.” In a GEW ranking, the district came in third place in Hesse school construction , behind the Hochtaunus and Main-Taunus districts.
Regional networking, start-up support, skilled workers
The district is also active beyond its local area: As a member of FrankfurtRheinMain GmbH, it represents the interests of all municipalities at trade fairs such as Expo Real in Munich , promotes start-ups through the ExistenZündungs" (Business Ignition) meetings , and is committed to preserving regional companies with the "Nachfolger gesucht" (Successors Wanted) Automotive Cluster RheinMainNeckar for approximately 25 years .
Another key focus is supporting childcare to make the region attractive to skilled workers. "The municipalities are responsible for childcare places, but we as a district provide support wherever we can with our childcare services department," said the district administrator.
According to Will, the Prognos results serve as a basis for an objective analysis . The goal is to continue on the chosen path: "We take our responsibility for the development of this dynamic district very seriously and will continue working for a good future for the people in our region."
