Bijan Kaffenberger: "Darmstadt's growth must be designed in a socially just way"
Darmstadt – The SPD Darmstadt is concerned about the results of the current Future Atlas 2025 by the Prognos research institute. While Darmstadt achieves a strong 13th place and is among the top performers nationwide in the categories of demographics (rank 3) and labor market (rank 9) the city of science is ranked for "Prosperity & Social Situation" 332nd place .
For Bijan Kaffenberger , member of the state parliament and chairman of the Darmstadt SPD, this is a clear warning signal: "Darmstadt's growth urgently needs to be shaped in a socially just way so that the city does not fall into social imbalance." Although the city benefits economically and is growing dynamically, the economic success is not reaching the people sufficiently .
Growth brings challenges for social infrastructure
Kaffenberger criticizes the fact that the growing city is increasingly reaching its capacity limits: "The streets, buses and trains are overcrowded, doctors' offices are no longer accepting new patients, primary schools are bursting at the seams, sports clubs have waiting lists and care services are overloaded." The city's economic success must be more strongly reflected in its social services , says Kaffenberger.
Social infrastructure as a basis for participation
The SPD sees a strong social infrastructure as a prerequisite for long-term stability, participation, and quality of life. Especially lower-income groups depend on functioning structures in education, healthcare, care, and leisure. "If the social infrastructure doesn't grow in line with demand, too many people will be left behind," warns Kaffenberger.
The SPD Darmstadt announces that it will continue to monitor the issue in the coming months and develop concrete solutions. The goal is to identify social challenges early and address them sustainably.
