Cooperation between the city, Diakonie and LWV Hessen opens up new perspectives
"FlexHi" project on Wednesday (1) . The goal is to provide better support to homeless people with mental health disabilities and enable them to participate in society.
"FlexHi is an innovative offering and promises good prospects for homeless people with mental disabilities in Darmstadt. The project is the result of a successful collaboration between the Science City of Darmstadt, the Regional Diakonie Darmstadt-Dieburg, and the Hesse State Welfare Association," explained Mayor Barbara Akdeniz.
Help for people who are not reached by regular services
Darmstadt already offers a wide range of support services for homeless people. However, those affected, who cannot be reached due to serious illnesses or untreated psychoses, are often excluded. This is precisely where "FlexHi" comes in.
"People who are very ill and living in degrading conditions in public spaces repeatedly come to our facilities. Now, together with the city of Darmstadt and the Hesse Regional Welfare Association, we have succeeded in creating a service specifically aimed at this group of people," said Jenna Reibold, head of the Darmstadt-Dieburg Regional Diakonie.
Building blocks of the project
The model project, which is initially planned for three years, combines several measures:
- outreach services
- Accommodation in single rooms
- intensive social work support
- long-term assistance in living in your own apartment
"With this concept, we hope to improve these very difficult living situations. We are very pleased that this service is now launching," emphasized Nicole Frölich, Head of Emergency Housing Assistance at Diakonie.
LWV State Director Susanne Simmler also emphasizes the importance: "We want to provide people who often live on the margins of society with an environment that restores their security and dignity. With this joint project, we are finally creating the vital 'one-stop shop'."
Mayor Barbara Akdeniz summarizes: “FlexHi is another building block for overcoming exclusion and toward participation for homeless people in Darmstadt.”
