Planning agreement in progress – Head of Transport Wandrey emphasizes importance for school routes and neighborhood development
The city of Darmstadt and Deutsche Bahn (DB) are preparing a joint planning agreement for the "Am Judenteich" level crossing. The aim is a safe, gated crossing, which is a particularly important transport link for the Edelsteinviertel district. This was announced by Head of Transport Paul Georg Wandrey.
“The planning agreement is the result of constructive discussions with the DB Group's representative for Hesse, Dr. Klaus Vornhusen,” said Wandrey. The draft is currently being prepared by the railway company. Following its planned completion in the coming months, the next planning steps could begin in early 2026.
Wandrey emphasized the urgent need for action at the crossing: "Visibility in the area of the railway curve is limited, while school and leisure traffic there is constantly increasing." Originally, the crossing was intended for occasional pedestrian traffic – however, it is now part of the school route plan for children from the Edelstein district and is heavily used.
With the recently concluded urban development agreement for the development of the previously unused areas in the Edelstein district, a further increase in the number of residents is expected. "This made it all the more important to convince Deutsche Bahn of the significance of this project," said Wandrey. However, construction is not expected to begin before 2031 – due to the lengthy preparation time required for planning, permits, and EU-wide tenders.
Wandrey concludes: “It is important that the Edelstein district will have a safe and gated level crossing – that is now guaranteed.”
