History Society invites you to the Ernst-Ludwig-Saal
Darmstadt-Eberstadt – The Eberstadt/Frankenstein Historical Society invites you to a lecture on Friday, October 17, 2025, at 7 p.m. in the Ernst-Ludwig-Saal, Schwanenstraße 42. The topic will be the arrival of the railway in Eberstadt in 1846.
With the opening of the Main-Neckar Railway almost 180 years ago, Eberstadt received its own station, complete with a neo-Romanesque station building constructed of red sandstone. The building dominated the townscape for over a century but was demolished after 1960.
The station was of great importance for the economic development of Eberstadt and Pfungstadt. By 1846, there were hourly connections to Frankfurt, as well as to Mannheim and Heidelberg, each of which could be reached in about an hour.
In his presentation, speaker Michael Sailer will focus on the rapid technological development of locomotives. While the first locomotives manufactured in England only reached speeds of around 30 km/h, by 1850, trains were already traveling at over 70 km/h.
Admission to the event is free.
