Six-week closure for targeted pest control starting August 4th
Weiterstadt. Due to a severe rat infestation, the playground at Am Krötenberg for approximately six weeks starting Monday, August 4, 2025. The city of Weiterstadt is taking this measure in response to increased rat sightings and is carrying out targeted pest control to protect children and ensure public safety.
“A playground is no place for rodents. The safety of the children is our top priority,” emphasizes Mayor Ralf Möller . The pest control will be handled by the specialized company Kleinlogel , which will begin its work on August 4th.
Food scraps attract rats
Rats are attracted by food scraps, packaging, and waste – especially in high-traffic areas like playgrounds. Besides causing hygiene problems, they can transmit diseases and damage playground equipment.
The city points out that it already operates a comprehensive rat control program in the public sewer system. Currently, 40 bait boxes in use, which are checked every three weeks. These initially contain non-toxic bait with a counter. Only in cases of actual infestation are measured poison baits used – a procedure that meets current environmental and animal welfare standards .
Previous widespread applications of poison into the sewer system are no longer permitted due to legal regulations.
Appeal to the population
The city is asking all citizens for their support :
- Do not leave any trash or food scraps in playgrounds
- Report any sightings of rats or signs of infestation directly to the public order office
- The city's trash cans are emptied regularly (two to three times a week), but it still helps if everyone contributes keeping the facilities clean.
The city administration thanks everyone for their understanding and cooperation in order to reopen the playground Am Krötenberg for children as quickly as possible.
