More reports in winter – prevention and information on reporting rat sightings
For several weeks now, the city of Griesheim receiving an increasing number of reports of rat sightings via its online reporting system. The municipality is using this heightened awareness to provide information on the causes, preventative measures, and responsible authorities.
Griesheim has been conducting ongoing rat monitoring since 2023 to systematically observe the development of the rat population within the city limits. Like almost all cities in Germany, Griesheim has a rat population. The animals live predominantly in the sewers and are mainly visible when they surface for food.
It is noticeable that the number of reported sightings increases particularly during the winter months, even though the overall population remains stable. One reason for this is the longer periods of darkness in the colder months, as rats are primarily active at night and therefore more frequently emerge from the sewer system to the surface.
Prevention: How to avoid rat infestations
Rats are attracted to food sources. Therefore, proper waste disposal is the most important preventative measure. The following points are particularly relevant:
• Keep waste containers closed, and secure them with a lock if necessary.
• Close yellow bags tightly and store them in enclosed places inaccessible to animals.
• Do not dispose of food scraps down the toilet.
• Do not leave waste in parks, green spaces, or flower beds.
Disposing of food waste down the toilet is considered particularly problematic. Odors form in the wastewater that specifically attract rats. In unfavorable circumstances, the animals can follow the smell back to the source and enter buildings via the pipes. Food waste should always be disposed of in the organic waste bin or, if necessary, in the general waste bin.
Responsibilities and reporting of rat infestations
Property owners are responsible for controlling rats on their private property. Tenants must first report any such findings to their landlord.
Rat sightings in public spaces can still be reported via the city's online reporting system. These reports are incorporated into the existing monitoring program and help the city to identify problem areas early and respond effectively.
