Conversation and poems on March 24, 2026 at Darmstadt Palace
Under the title "The Wild Fire of the World," the German-Polish Institute invites you to a reading and discussion on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, at 7 p.m. The occasion is the fifth anniversary of the death of the Polish poet Adam Zagajewski. The event will take place in the Karl Dedecius Hall at Darmstadt Palace.
Adam Zagajewski, born in Lviv, is one of Poland's most important lyric poets. He became known for his passionately melancholic descriptions of the world. He died on March 21, 2021, in Krakow.
Karl Dedecius, founder of the German-Polish Institute, translated numerous poems by Zagajewski into German. Renate Schmidgall, a translator living in Darmstadt, also made his work accessible to a German-speaking audience. In a conversation with DPI Director Peter Oliver Loew, she will explore the poet's personality and literary work. Selected poems will also be read.
Renate Schmidgall has been translating Polish prose and poetry into German for several decades. Among other awards, she has received the Karl Dedecius Prize for translators of Polish literature and is also a distinguished poet herself. Peter Oliver Loew is a historian and translator, as well as director of the German Polish Institute.
