On Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at 7:00 p.m. , the Literature Initiative of the Darmstadt KulturStärken e. V. association to a special reading in the gallery of the Rosengarten restaurant . Darmstadt author Ilona Einwohlt will read from her new novel "Wenn die Nacht brennt" (When the Night Burns) , published in 2025 by BoD (cover: Christoph Grundmann).
The book recounts everyday life during the war – between kitchen and air raid sirens, between friendship, fear, and survival. Einwohlt vividly portrays how women played a central role in the Nazi era, beyond the Mother's Cross and the home front. The story is marked by the firebombing of Darmstadt on September 11, 1944 , whose horrors and human tragedies she brings to life in literary form.
With great sensitivity and historical awareness, Einwohlt illuminates how war and dictatorship changed the view of family, love and motherhood – themes that continue to have an impact today.
Ilona Einwohlt, known for numerous children's and young adult books, addresses a serious chapter of German history in her new novel. She lives in Darmstadt and has intensively researched the history of her city and her own family history for this work.
