New paintwork is based on the historical plaster – city responds to suggestions from the public.
As the City of Darmstadt has announced, the southern wall of the Old Cemetery along Poepperlingweg will be cleaned and repainted in the coming weeks – as soon as weather permits. This work is being carried out in close consultation with the Lower Monument Protection Authority. The color used is "Brown Ochre 40 ," which is based on the historic plaster of a small, preserved section in the entrance area.
Maintenance of a significant cultural monument
The wall is one of the defining historical elements of Darmstadt's eastern district. For almost two hundred years, it has enclosed the Old Cemetery and is thus an important part of the city's history. The redesign will remove both age-related wear and tear as well as numerous graffiti and so-called tags. The city is also responding to repeated concerns from the public, who had pointed out the particular need for respect at a cemetery wall.
Michael Kolmer, the city's head of green spaces and historic preservation, emphasizes the importance of the measure:
"We are committed to preserving our historical heritage and protecting Darmstadt's architectural culture – responsibly and with the utmost care. I appeal to everyone to respect our shared municipal property and the feelings of those who visit the cemetery."
A clear stance against vandalism – offers for the graffiti scene
To prevent vandalism, the city also points to existing legal options. The Lincoln Wall , at approximately 700 meters, is Hesse's longest legal graffiti wall. Furthermore, the city is in discussions with the neighboring SV Darmstadt 98 sports club to create additional suitable opportunities.
Kolmer announces that new graffiti on the cemetery wall will be removed promptly in the future:
“We will continue to keep an eye on the cemetery wall. New graffiti will be removed at short notice – if necessary, by me personally, to relieve my employees.”
