Party emphasizes importance of climate priority areas and inter-municipal cooperation
Darmstadt. Alliance 90/The Greens Darmstadt have reaffirmed their support for the draft of the new South Hesse Regional Plan and endorsed the Greens' position in the regional assembly. The party warns against attempts to weaken intermunicipal cooperation through independent initiatives and calls for respect for the work of democratic bodies.
The draft regional plan was developed over a multi-year process involving all parties in the South Hesse Regional Assembly. The CDU, SPD, Greens, and Left Party voted in favor of its public disclosure. The document sets out perspectives for housing and economic development and, for the first time, comprehensively considers climate-relevant areas.
According to the Green Party, cold air generation areas and air ducts are an essential component of health protection and climate adaptation. They serve as a "protective shield against heat waves, poor air quality, and the impacts of climate change" and are particularly relevant for Darmstadt. The party believes that eliminating such areas would negatively impact the quality of life and health in the region.
The Greens emphasize that regional planning allows for a holistic view and that climate protection is closely linked to responsible urban development. Any additional sealing of land is difficult to reverse later. Municipal development interests must therefore be placed in a supra-regional context.
The party also criticizes contradictions in the current debate: On the one hand, there are calls to slow urban growth, while on the other, planning instruments should be relaxed to allow for more construction projects. Growth must be shaped, not blocked – with a long-term perspective rather than short-term actionism.
The Greens appeal to all political decision-makers to participate objectively and constructively in the ongoing public consultation on the regional plan. The goal is to reconcile economic strength, climate protection, and quality of life in the Rhine-Main-South Hesse region.
