Darmstadt 98 and ENTEGA commission the largest photovoltaic plant in Darmstadt
SV Darmstadt 98, together with its long-standing partner, the eco-energy and telecommunications supplier ENTEGA, has installed around 2,900 photovoltaic modules on the roofs of the main stand and the opposite stand of the Merck Stadium at Böllenfalltor, covering a total area of almost 5,700 square meters.
The photovoltaic system is almost as large as the lawn. It went into operation in mid-March and has a capacity of approximately 1,200 kWp, making it the largest photovoltaic system in Darmstadt. Theoretically, it could supply 450 households with green electricity annually. Compared to the German electricity mix, this will prevent around 840 tons of CO2 emissions each year.

The green electricity produced by the system can be used directly by SV 98 in the stadium. According to ENTEGA's calculations, around 46 percent of the electricity produced by the photovoltaic system can be used directly in the stadium. The remaining electricity can be used for the adjacent functional building. Electricity not used by SV 98 itself is fed into the e-netz Südhessen distribution network by ENTEGA as green electricity and thus reaches Darmstadt households.
Dr. Marie-Luise Wolff, Chair of the Board of ENTEGA, said: “The sustainable expansion of renewable energy generation facilities must continue to be driven forward rapidly and at a rapid pace. Since the permitting processes for the construction of wind turbines are unfortunately very lengthy, we must also focus more heavily on photovoltaics in the future. We and the Lilies have a long-standing partnership, which is now being intensified in the area of photovoltaics. Through a fixed-interest subordinated loan, we are offering all interested parties the opportunity to actively invest in the energy transition and also to participate financially in it.”
“A sustainable club culture is firmly anchored in our mission statement and part of our self-image. We take this responsibility for the environment and society very seriously; the new photovoltaic system is therefore a clear sign of conscious action and another important building block of our sustainability strategy. We are delighted to be able to actively promote this sustainability with our partner ENTEGA and also that the largest PV system in Darmstadt can now be found on the roofs of the Merck Stadium at Böllenfalltor,” said Michael Weilguny, Managing Director of SV Darmstadt 98.
The plant is operated by ENTEGA subsidiary ENTEGA NATURpur AG, which initiated and financed the project. Construction of the plant was carried out by its sister company, Energy Project Solutions GmbH. Furthermore, since March 1, 2024, ENTEGA NATURpur AG has offered citizen participation in its Darmstadt photovoltaic plant at the Merck Station near Böllenfalltor. This allows interested citizens to invest sustainably in the local energy transition through a qualified subordinated loan with a fixed interest rate. All information regarding citizen participation and subscribing to the subordinated loan is available at buergerbeteiligung.entega.de or by calling the service number +49 6151 493 8607 (Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.).
