The science city of Darmstadt recognizes the commitment of the school community and the successful renovation of a listed master building.
Darmstadt. After two years of renovations, the B building of the Ludwig-Georgs-Gymnasium (LGG) officially reopened on Wednesday, November 5, 2025. City Treasurer André Schellenberg and School Superintendent Holger Klötzner, together with representatives of the school, handed over the modernized premises to the school community.
The building on Nieder-Ramstädter Straße is one of Darmstadt's five master buildings and is a listed historical monument . It was designed in the mid-1950s by architect Max Taut Bauhaus style . The Ludwig-Georgs-Gymnasium is the oldest grammar school in southern Hesse and the only one in Darmstadt specializing in classical languages.
Building section B comprises 14 classrooms as well as specialist rooms and collection rooms for geography, biology, and chemistry . The central foyer was also completely modernized. With the renovation completed in the summer of 2025, the building now boasts modern teaching conditions, barrier-free access , and facilities that combine both the preservation of its historical character with contemporary functionality .
“Together with all parties involved, the real estate management of the City of Darmstadt was able to take all aspects into account, such as user requirements, fire safety, historic preservation, climate protection, and accessibility,” emphasized City Treasurer André Schellenberg . “The school administration and community have done an extraordinary job during this challenging time.”
Holger Klötzner, the education officer, also praised the school community's efforts: "My special thanks go to headmaster Björn Hamburger , who supported the project with great dedication. Thanks to his efforts, accessibility has been significantly improved compared to the original plans."
The project management and client responsibility lay with the real estate management department of the city of Darmstadt , which successfully coordinated the renovation.
