The first meeting at the district office sets an example for sustainability and community
District of Groß-Gerau. volunteer repair initiatives of the district of Groß-Gerau met for the first time for a joint networking meeting at the district administration office . At the suggestion of the Repair Café Mainspitze, the meeting was organized by volunteer coordinator Melanie Götz and Fairtrade coordinator Stefan Leimbach together with Marta Wachowiak , head of the climate protection department.
Of the 13 initiatives in the district, seven repair cafés with eleven volunteers participated. The aim of the meeting was to exchange information on organization, public relations, recruiting volunteers , and new opportunities for cooperation.
Diversity and commitment in the workshops
The services offered by repair cafés are wide-ranging: they extend from the repair of household appliances, computers, bicycles and consumer electronics to textiles and the sharpening of knives and scissors . The initiatives emphasize that they are not intended to compete with commercial businesses .
Offene Werkstatt Gernsheim eV offers a special concept : tools, materials and knowledge are shared there, making collaborative work possible – regardless of prior experience.
Besides practical help, community is also a key focus . Repair cafés foster encounters, create social connections, and facilitate exchange across generations. Experienced volunteers who are active in several workshops – affectionately known as " traveling mechanics " – are particularly in demand.
Support from the district and outlook
The Groß-Gerau district central overview of all repair services is planned for the district's website , supplemented by contact information, opening hours, and event details. In addition, volunteers can take advantage of the training opportunities offered by the "Fit for Volunteering" program .

At the end of the meeting, there was also agreement that the exchange should take place annually in the future. The next networking meeting will be hosted by Offene Werkstatt Gernsheim eV .
