Autobahn GmbH warns of traffic jams on many routes between the beginning of August and mid-September
Berlin/Southern Hesse. The summer holidays are drawing to a close – and with them, the risk of traffic jams on German motorways . As the Federal Autobahn GmbH increased travel traffic in the coming weeks, particularly on weekends in August and early September . Both those returning home and holidaymakers heading out on vacation should expect delays.
Return and arrival traffic overlap
According to Autobahn GmbH, the overlap of return traffic with ongoing arrivals is particularly challenging – many holiday accommodations are rented out by the week, which further concentrates the peak travel times.
Forecast in weeks: Where things could get tight
August 4–10: First wave of return travel from Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia.
Traffic congestion is particularly likely on Saturday, August 9 (significantly increased) and Sunday, August 10 (noticeably increased).
Affected routes include: A2, A3, A4, A7, A8, A9, A10, A93, A99
August 11–17: Return journey from Bremen, Lower Saxony, Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland.
Heavy traffic on August 16 (Saturday), less so on Sunday.
Affected routes include: A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, A9, A61, A93, A99
August 18–24: Return journey from North Rhine-Westphalia
. Heavy traffic is expected on August 23 and 24.
Affected routes include: A1, A2, A3, A5, A7, A8, A9, A44, A59, A61, A93, A99
August 25–31: Moderate easing of traffic expected.
Noticeably increased traffic only on Saturday, August 30.
September 1–7: End of school holidays in Northern Germany (e.g., Hamburg, Berlin, Brandenburg).
Traffic forecast for Saturday, September 6 (heavy) and Sunday, September 7 (moderate).
Affected routes include: A1, A2, A3, A7, A8, A9, A10, A24, A93, A99
September 8–14: Return travel surge from Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg
. Peak days are Saturday, September 13, and Sunday, September 14.
