Young talent from the Lilies youth academy will be active in La Liga in the future
After six years with SV Darmstadt 98, defender Clemens Riedel is leaving the Lilies and joining Spanish first division club RCD Espanyol Barcelona with immediate effect. Both clubs have agreed to keep the transfer details confidential.
“It’s something special for the entire club that a player who came through our youth academy will be playing in La Liga in the future,” explained sporting director Paul Fernie. “We knew there was interest in Giemens and that a transfer was possible during this transfer window. With this transfer, we’ve achieved a very good result for all parties involved. Young players can see that it’s possible to make the leap from youth to professional football at Darmstadt. At the same time, we’ve benefited both on and off the pitch from his training. And Clemens himself has made this step into a top league possible through his outstanding development in Darmstadt.”
Riedel joined SV 98's youth academy in July 2019 and made his professional debut on July 24, 2021, at the age of 18. The Wölfersheim native made a total of 84 competitive appearances for Darmstadt. His performances also earned him call-ups to the German U19 national team (seven appearances) and the U21 national team (one appearance).
