Oppenheimer in a moral dilemma
Christian Suhr, artistic director of the BüchnerBühne Riedstadt, has been directing a play for the Aschaffenburg City Theatre since January 2nd, commissioned by the association BüchnerFindetStatt. A newly assembled ensemble from across Germany is rehearsing Heinar Kipphardt's play "In der Sache J. Robert Oppenheimer" (In the Matter of J. Robert Oppenheimer). The premiere took place on Saturday, January 25th, at the Aschaffenburg City Theatre. Tickets are available exclusively through the theatre's website.
Two performances are scheduled at the theater's main venue in Leeheim (Kirchstraße 16, Riedstadt-Leeheim) on Friday, January 31 , and Saturday, February 1, both at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for both performances in Riedstadt are available in advance from various locations in the surrounding area (Faktotum bookstores in Riedstadt and Bornhofen, Gernsheim; the information desk at the district office; Florales flower shop, Weidstraße 5 F; the reception desk at Riedstadt Town Hall; and BüchnerHaus, Weidstraße 9, Goddelau) or through Reservix, which is also available in the wider region.
Based on original documents, the play examines the 1954 hearings of the US Atomic Energy Commission. The focus is on physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, who, as head of the Manhattan Project, had significantly advanced the development of the atomic bomb. The commission questions Oppenheimer's loyalty to the government because of his past contacts with communists and his opposition to the development of the hydrogen bomb.
