Data basis for future traffic planning – cameras record vehicle volume until autumn
Hesse is participating in the large-scale collection of traffic data on federal, state, and county roads as part of the nationwide 2025 road traffic census. Commissioned by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Economic Affairs (BMDV), data on vehicle volume will be recorded at approximately 3,000 counting stations throughout Hesse.
The counts began in 2024 and will continue from April 2025. The survey is expected to be completed by autumn 2025. In addition to federal highways, state roads and selected county roads – at the request of some counties – are also included.
Basis for road construction and traffic management
The recorded traffic volumes serve as an important planning basis for road construction and traffic management at the federal and state levels. New this year is that the traffic count will be conducted over a two-year . This allows for improvements in data quality – for example, by repeating counts when traffic volume is affected by unforeseen events such as roadworks or detours.
Cameras in use – data protection guaranteed
To record traffic volumes cameras mounted on structures such as bridges are used. These serve solely for classifying and counting vehicles . All cameras are clearly marked , and the recorded video images are not used to identify individuals or license plates.
Hessen Mobil are responsible for the installation and removal of the data collection devices . The traffic count is part of a nationwide measure conducted every five years.
