Construction work is intended to improve traffic safety at the town entrance
The city of Darmstadt is modifying the route of a pedestrian and cycle path in Arheilgen. The Parks and Green Spaces Department is altering the paved connecting path between Maulbeerallee and Schreberweg on Frankfurter Landstraße. The aim of the measure is to increase traffic safety and adapt the path layout to the actual use by pedestrians and cyclists.
Adaptation to heavily used areas
Particularly in the area of the Kleiststraße intersection, the adjacent lawn has shown significant wear and tear for years. The installation of safety barriers at the tram crossing and the increasing use by larger and heavier bicycles have considerably increased the space required there.
The consequences included puddles and mudslides. Adjusting the path's route should improve this situation in the future.
Paving stones are moved and reused
During the work, the paved path will be shifted towards a large shrub. Excess paving stones and edging will be removed and reused on the other side. This will largely eliminate the need for new building materials.
The previously built-over planting area will be recreated in place of the old path. The overall size of the lawn area will remain unchanged, and no additional sealing of the ground will occur.
Green Spaces Officer Michael Kolmer explains: “With this measure, we are responding to changing usage habits and at the same time creating a safe and sustainable solution for all road users.”
Construction work will begin in early March
The project has been commissioned to Schmitt & Scalzo Garten- und Landschaftsbau GmbH. Construction is scheduled to begin on March 4, 2026. Depending on the weather, the work is expected to take approximately seven to ten days and be completed by mid-March.
During the construction work, the affected pedestrian and cycle path intersection and the tram crossing will be closed off. Pedestrians and cyclists are asked to use the extended Kleiststraße as an alternative route during this time.
