Missing hazard warnings and inadequate training were found.
As the Darmstadt Regional Council reports, its market surveillance unit deficiencies in the labeling and storage of detergents and cleaning products inspections of zero-waste shops in the Rhine-Main region . The authority points out that even in "unpackaged" sales, hazard warnings for consumers must be clearly visible.
Missing labels and improper storage
In several stores, canisters and buckets containing hazardous cleaning agents were placed in such a way that the hazard pictograms were not visible . In some cases, the products had been transferred from their original containers into unlabeled containers or without sufficient information required by chemical regulations .
Furthermore, some stores lacked printed labels for customer use , which are mandatory when filling products into customers' own containers. These labels must include, among other things, product names, supplier information, hazard pictograms, and warnings .
Criticisms also inadequately trained staff and improperly closed containers within reach of children .
Legal changes and information exchange
The RP market surveillance authority also used the discussions with shop owners to inform them legal changes in chemicals legislation to be dispensed at refill stations corrosive dishwasher detergents and highly flammable disinfectants .
Following the inspections, the regional council also contacted wholesalers of cleaning products. These wholesalers had already been informed about the new regulations and provided informational materials and printable labels . Some wholesalers also recommended that hazardous products only be filled by trained personnel wearing protective equipment .
Improvements expected
Back in 2024, the Regional Council's market surveillance unit had already checked the relabeling of cleaning products of non-European origin . Many retailers were unaware of the legal requirements at that time. Based on the positive feedback regarding the current guidance and the improved information provided by wholesalers, the Regional Council now anticipates a rapid improvement in the situation .
Consumers should ensure that are never placed in food containers that they are clearly labeled . This is the only way to guarantee appropriate medical assistance in an emergency.
