The city of Darmstadt is responding to complaints and is examining new solutions for the open drug scene at Herrngarten
grand opening of the new Scentral contact center for drug support services for Wednesday, September 10, 2025 has been postponed indefinitely. Mayor Hanno Benz, in agreement with the drug support services, explained the decision by stating that it was the wrong time for an official celebration: “As a city, we still have tasks to complete. Our top priority now is to provide immediate relief from the situation at the Herrngarten entrance on Frankfurter Straße/Landwehrstraße and the associated problems.”
Complaints regarding the interim solution
While the new building is already occupied, the completion of the outdoor area is delayed due to structural damage. Since the outdoor areas cannot be used by clients, temporary pavilion tents have been erected on Landwehrstraße. These have led to numerous complaints from residents in recent weeks.
No separation of the Herrngarten
Benz clarified that current plans involving the separation of a public section of the Herrngarten or structural openings in a listed wall will not be pursued further: "Such proposals are neither expedient nor justifiable." The implementation of these measures has been stopped until a viable, professionally coordinated concept is available.
External expertise consulted
To find a lasting solution for dealing with the open drug scene, the city has commissioned the Association for Work and Educational Assistance Frankfurt eV (VAE) as an external expert to provide an assessment. This assessment will also include a review of existing plans, which will be adjusted if necessary. Benz emphasized that all significant changes – such as the establishment of mobile consumption rooms – will be submitted to the city council for a decision.
