A musical and literary evening with piano and texts on March 27th
The Chopin Society Darmstadt invites you to a musical and literary evening at the Literaturhaus Darmstadt on Friday, March 27, 2026 , at 7 p.m. The event, entitled "Schumann and the Spirits of Romanticism," will focus on works and texts related to the composer Robert Schumann.
The evening will be presented by pianist Konstantin Zvyagin and musicologist Ulrike Kienzle. Music, letters, poems, and literary texts will combine to create a program that illuminates the dark and visionary aspects of the Romantic era.
Romance between inspiration and abyss
The three-part program explores different phases of Schumann's life. It begins with the "Night Pieces ," which are based on literary motifs from the work of the writer E.T.A. Hoffmann.
The second part focuses on Schumann's setting of the poem "Manfred" by the British poet Lord Byron. The work is considered a musical psychodrama, reflecting the composer's growing inner conflicts.
The program concludes with the "Ghost Variations," Schumann's last composition. It was written two years before his death, when the composer was already suffering from severe mental crises and attributed his musical ideas to visions and supposed angelic voices.
Two experienced performers
Konstantin Zvyagin studied in Moscow and Cologne, among other places, and works internationally as a pianist. Since 2020, he has taught at the Darmstadt Academy of Music.
Ulrike Kienzle is a private lecturer in musicology at Goethe University Frankfurt, an author, and a dramaturge. She is known, among other things, for her lecture series "Kienzle's Classics" at the Alte Oper Frankfurt.
