Innovative climate adaptation solution implemented in Brunnenstraße and Sudetenstraße
With the comprehensive renovation of Brunnenstraße and Sudetenstraße, not only renewed two important traffic routes, but also implemented a pioneering concept for climate adaptation: the sponge city principle play streets in the future – and at the same time make an active contribution to protection against heavy rain and the urban climate .
Rainwater management in a new way
The sponge city principle aims to capture rainwater where it falls . Instead of channeling it into the sewer system, it seeps into the ground directly on-site through special, permeable soil layers . Tree plantings complement the system, helping to store the water and release it slowly back into the surrounding area. This results in:
- reduces the risk of flooding
- the groundwater strengthened
- improves the microclimate
Exemplary role for the district
The measure has attracted attention not only within the city but also beyond the region. Experts from the district administration have already visited the site to learn more about the project.
Mayor Manuel Feick emphasizes:
“With this renovation, we are demonstrating that infrastructure and climate protection can go hand in hand. The new play streets offer a higher quality of life – especially for children – and make Reinheim a more livable place.”
