Interactive exhibition brings research to the city center – hands-on stations, VR experiences and school programs
With the new SCIENCE POP-UP in downtown Darmstadt, the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research, together with the future international accelerator center FAIR, has opened an interactive experience space for young and old. The opening took place on March 24, 2025, at Ernst-Ludwig-Straße 22. The offering is aimed at everyone – with a special focus on school groups – and brings cutting-edge research to the heart of the city throughout the summer.
The pop-up project is part of the city's "City Points" downtown program and is supported by the federal funding program "Sustainable City Centers and Centres." Its aim is to make science tangible while simultaneously contributing to the revitalization of the city center. Visitors can gain exciting insights into particle physics and accelerator technology – including virtual tours, workshops, hands-on exhibits, and a VR experience that leads directly to the GSI/FAIR campus.
“Science needs enthusiasm – and we want to share that enthusiasm,” says Professor Dr. Thomas Nilsson, Scientific Director of GSI/FAIR. Mayor Hanno Benz also welcomes the innovative project: “The SCIENCE POP-UP makes science tangible and strengthens the connection between the city center, research, and the community.”
In addition to the general public, school classes, project groups, and educational institutions are invited to use the SCIENCE POP-UP as a learning space. Further information is available on the official GSI/FAIR website:
