Three artistic positions in the gallery in the old train station
The exhibition “Forms, Colors, Signs” at the gallery in the old train station in Roßdorf brings together works by Sabine Huck, Karin von der Saal, and Heinz Littig. Drawing, calligraphy, ecoprinting, and sculpture enter into a multifaceted dialogue about the observation of nature, writing as image, and the expressive power of wood.
Sabine Huck gathers her motifs on walks through the countryside. Plants, seed heads, blossoms, or traces of decay are transferred by her onto wood, canvas, or metal matrices – sometimes simplified, sometimes richly detailed, using pencil or delicate, muted colors. The result is a series of distorted plant portraits against dark backgrounds, their larger-than-life representations drawing attention to previously overlooked details. Other works lead into abstract landscapes, into which traces have been etched or scraped – silent pictorial spaces that leave their destination open to interpretation.
For Karin von der Saal, handwriting is akin to a meditative practice. In her calligraphic works, she engages with literary texts, which she transcribes onto handmade paper in historical or contemporary scripts as well as in freehand writing. Ink, India ink, and watercolor combine with graphic or painterly elements to create serene or expressive calligraphic images in which legibility often takes a backseat to visual impact: content becomes image, image becomes content.
A joint section of the exhibition showcases ecoprint works by the two artists. Plants were transferred to paper using steam and then further processed – drawings by Sabine Huck, and text added by Karin von der Saal.
The sculptor Heinz Littig prefers to work with avalanche debris from the Upper Engadine region, often Swiss pine, but also larch, sequoia, or dead fruitwood. From inner images and experiences, he develops abstract sculptures that appear sometimes compact, sometimes open and dynamic. The surfaces range from smooth to sawn or hewn, occasionally subtly colored. Littig describes his work as a dialogue with the wood – characterized by respect, attention, and the attempt to allow the material to express its own voice.
The exhibition invites visitors to discover very different artistic approaches to nature, language, and form side by side.
