The Darmstadt State Theatre celebrates its renovation with premieres, guest dance performances and a family play.
Darmstadt. After four and a half years of extensive renovations, the Small House of the Darmstadt State Theatre its doors. The modernized theatre boasts new stage technology, improved acoustics, and a strong focus on the audience – and celebrates its reopening with a special cultural program.
“In the newly renovated Small House, the focus is on the individual,” emphasized Artistic Director Karsten Wiegand at the presentation. “From every seat, you can hear and see superbly. The new Small House has outstanding acoustics and, with state-of-the-art technology, allows you to experience all the magic of theatre.”
During the autumn holidays, children and young people had already developed initial scenes on the new stage as part of workshops – documented in a short film that was shown press conference with Hesse's Finance Minister Prof. Dr. R. Alexander Lorz , State Secretary for Culture Christoph Degen , Mayor Hanno Benz and Susanne Ritter from the State Construction and Real Estate Company Hesse (LBIH)
Investing in the future of theatre culture
approximately 68 million euros in the renovation. This sends a strong signal for the promotion of culture in southern Hesse.
“The Kleine Haus now represents a theater of the future – open, sustainable, and with improved accessibility,” said State Secretary Christoph Degen . Finance Minister Lorz spoke of a “happy ending” after many challenges during the construction phase: “The result is a clear commitment to promoting culture in Darmstadt.”
Mayor Hanno Benz also emphasized the importance of the renovation: "The Kleine Haus will once again be a stage and cultural meeting place – a central component of Darmstadt's theatre landscape."
Technically at the highest level
According to project manager Susanne Ritter from LBIH Süd, 3,450 cubic meters of reinforced concrete , 57 kilometers of electrical cable , and 60 tons of stage technology used in the construction. Particular attention was paid to fire protection and energy-efficient modernization . The result: a technically and acoustically outstanding theater space.
Opening weekend in November
The new Kleine Haus kicks off with a varied opening weekend :
- November 1st, 7 pm: Rave Lucid – Dance performance by the French ensemble Mazelfreten
- November 2nd, 7 pm: Glimmer – an audiovisual spectacle by Rui Horta & Micro Audio Waves
- November 7, 7 p.m.: Prima Facie – award-winning legal drama by Suzie Miller (Theater Day price: 9 euros)
- November 8th/9th, 2 pm–10 am: Hesse's longest reading – a 20-hour Proust marathon with staff members of the State Theatre
- November 9th, 4 pm: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer – a family play based on Mark Twain
