Due to weather conditions, construction work on the southern recreation area is suspended – the city is focusing on high-quality workmanship.
The city of Griesheim has announced that construction work on the new basketball and soccer cage at the southern recreation area will be suspended over the winter months. Due to the persistently damp and low temperatures, the planned installation of the seamless synthetic sports field surface and the asphalt substructure is no longer possible this year.
Christian Grunwald, head of youth development and project coordinator, explains that work will continue as soon as the weather permits the professional installation of the sports flooring in spring 2026. The playing field and the "cage"—the surrounding, noise-reducing stainless steel fence—are already in place, and the drainage and substructure have also been prepared.
Mayor Geza Krebs-Wetzl emphasized the importance of the new facility: The modern cage sends a strong message about youth, physical activity, and community engagement in public spaces. While the delay was regrettable, it was necessary to ensure the high quality of the sports surface in the long term.
The skate park will remain completely closed during the winter months, as the adjacent areas are part of the construction site. The mobile youth work program will also be suspended on-site, as experience has shown that fewer young people are out and about during the colder months.
Once completed, the approximately 20 by 13 meter playing field will be equipped with a water-permeable, elastic synthetic surface. The area can be used flexibly: while basketball is played on one half, a three-on-three soccer game can be played across the other. A separate, barrier-free access route will be added after the sports flooring is installed.
The concept was developed by the Frankfurt-based planning office LS² Landschaftsarchitekten using youth participation formats. Implementation is being carried out by Reuter GaLaBau GmbH. The project is financed through funds from the Regional Equalization Fund of Frankfurt Airport , a compensation fund of the state of Hesse for the promotion of municipal infrastructure projects in the airport region.
